Assignment is made by one person. Email is the fastest way to reach support — bug reports, feature requests, subscription questions, anything. Expect a reply within 2–3 business days. Including your iPhone model and iOS version helps.
What is Assignment?
Assignment tells New York City street and documentary photographers what's worth shooting today, across all five boroughs, ranked by editorial priority rather than by what's loudest. It's built to be read in one glance and decided in fifteen seconds. Data is derived from public City of New York event permits.

Do I need an account?
No. Assignment has no sign-up and no login. Open the app and the day's list is there. Your saved shoots, coverage log and settings live only on your device.
Why does it ask for my location?
Only to show how far each shoot is from you, and — with Pro — to limit alerts to a radius you choose. Location is used entirely on your device and is never sent to us. You can decline it and the app still works, just without distances. Manage it in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.
How is priority decided?
Each assignment is scored for news value and visual potential from the underlying permit — event type, scale, street closures and more — and surfaced by that priority. The signature orange ruler encodes it: full flare means drop everything. Today shows the strong shoots; the smaller ones stay out of the way.
How do notifications work?
The morning brief and high-priority alerts are scheduled locally on your device — there is no push server and no tracking. Turn them on or off in the app or in iOS Settings → Notifications → Assignment.
What's in Assignment Pro?
The full list, the priority ruler and the morning brief are free forever. Pro adds high-priority alerts (a heads-up before every 85+ shoot in your week), a custom alert radius, and saved filters. It's an auto-renewing subscription, billed monthly or yearly to your Apple ID.
How do I restore a purchase on a new device?
Open the paywall in the app and tap Restore purchases. As long as you're signed into the same Apple ID that bought Pro, your subscription will unlock.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are handled by Apple. On your iPhone, go to Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Assignment to change plan or cancel. Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends to avoid renewal.
Which cities does it cover?
New York City only, for now — all five boroughs.
A shoot's time or location looks wrong. What do I do?
Assignment reflects the City's published permit data, which can change or contain errors. Always confirm details before heading out. If something looks consistently off, email us the assignment name and we'll look into it.
How do I delete my data?
Everything Assignment stores lives on your device. Deleting the app removes all of it. See the Privacy Policy for details.
What do I need to run it?
An iPhone on iOS 18 or later.
